We badly need an exploded illustration or a picture of the intermediate shaft assembly and housing (the shaft that drives the distributor).

On my car the shaft has a lot of play at one end and the housing is being damaged.  When we took the housing apart, we found the shaft with a gear (which has a washer and nut). But my mechanic believes there should be a thrust washer or something to hold the shaft in place so there isn't any play, and there isn't any such thing.

So we need to know what is supposed to be there.  We don't know if we are wrong, if the assembly was done incorrectly at some point in the past, if a missing washer has worn away...

If anyone can supply an exploded view, or a usable picture, I'd be delighted!  If a fax is easiest that's fine: to 415-946-3454.

Thanks very much!

There's a diagram on page A14 of the Parts Catalogue Supplement, I'll fax over a copy. It's basically a shaft with a rotor that rides in the housing. The key to keeping all this together are the front and rear circlips on the shaft. If these fail or loose enough tension, then everything will go south very quickly. There is no thrust washer in the assembly. The only adjustment is by changing the body to housing gasket, or by actually filing the housing slightly to compensate for high mileage.

Ahah!  So we were wrong. I'll look for the fax, thank you very much.  And I see a copy of the Parts Catalogue Supplement in my immediate future...
