Hi,
I've become the caretaker for my late brother's 1973 Jensen Healey, It has the stock air filter setup with Zenith Stromberg carbs. And it's in another state.

Anyway, it seems filters are not available anywhere in the US. So I'm wondering what I could do for substitution. I'm guessing that the stock MGB air filters are probably a little too small.

Does anyone have the dimensions of the stock filter? It would help my search. I'm also going to try to get someone at the car to do a measurement.

thanks,
Paul.

The simple thing to do is order the filter from Martin Robey in the UK .

Paul,

I'll second Vance, Robey has what you need. You're right MGB filters won't fit the stock J/H air filter is a rather odd ball setup, the element has to be stretched to fit, people think it looks like a muffler.

I'm just curious, you're caretaker of somebody else's car (your late brother, sorry about that) in another state how did you conclude that it needs a new air filter element?

Well, not to get too far off topic. My nephew wants the car, as it was the last car my brother owned. But he's not particularly mechanically inclined. But he and a friend are willing to learn.

I am a long time 60-70s British car guy. And I want to encourage the next generation.

The problem I have with Robey is paying $50 for a consumable paper element. I was hoping that there had been work done on finding suitable replacement parts for unobtainable items.

For instance, Robey has the turn signal stack for 130bp, that's about $170 here. It looks identical to the one on my MGB. Maybe there is a different Molex on the end, that would have been dumb. Moss has it from Classic Gold for $100 and a no-name for $65.

I'm not a big fan of Ram Flo foam filters, and K&N seemingly abandoning these carburetors. They seem to have tripled in price in 15 years. So I'd like to keep the stock muffler look.

Paul.

Paul,

Always nice to hear about the next generation wanting to pick up the torch. This will be a good experience for him if he chooses to stick with it. He may not be mechanically inclined now but that won't last long. When I got my first LBC, an Austin-Healey, about the only thing I knew about cars was how to drive them. My toolbox consisted of a screwdriver, a crescent wrench, and a hammer.

The MGB turn signal quadrant is the same as used on the J/H but you will have to switch some pins around to make it work, I helped a friend do it and it wasn't a big deal. There are some interchangeable parts on the J/H with other LBCs. I wouldn't recommend the no-name parts to save a buck as they're usually Chinese and of poor quality. Pay up front and do it right and do it once.

I have K&Ns on my J/H but I was surprised to see how very expensive they've become. Another good parts source is Delta Motorsports.

Paul.

The Moss no name turn signal switches are crap - they fail very quickly. This has been discussed in Triumph forums at some length.

The Robey prices are more competitive if you purchase a membership for 20 pounds, which is good idea if you are going to care for a JH. It will pay for itself on your first order.

Robey defaults to an express premium shipping service with tracking unless you specify otherwise. You can opt for a much less expensive shipping method at checkout. It takes a bit longer and you cannot track the package, but you save $$$

As to the K&N issue. I agree, but then they have always been an expensive option. For the JH you can do some careful measuring and find what you need by sifting through the catalog based on size and style. I have had to do this on a couple of applications in the past.

I know we would all like to walk into our local NAPA and say "Gimme a widget for my JH" and the tech looks it up in their parts database, then hands it to us for $10. If one is looking for that experience, an obscure British Marque is not the car for him. He should get a Chevy instead.

I went to my box of "air filters, and believe it or not, I had 3 OEM ones plus and aftermarket one that can be compressed into an "oval" shape to fit the OEM air boxes.
I am not sure if the pictures will come through when I tyry attaching it using a "FILE".

Since I can't get the pictures to post without a ridiculous amount of effort of "resizing", if you wish to see the 3 photos with their names & numbers, please email me directly, RedRacerbm@gmail.com , and I will forward them to your email directly
