Jensen Healey
5 Speed Toyota Transmission Kit

Why this is good- the transmission in the JH is very vintage. The modified 4 speed Sunbeam Rapier runs out of gears for the freeway and the better quality Getrag 5 speed on late Jensen Healeys is nifty but the gearing is also spaced a bit funny, neither are ideal for highway cruising. Both are extremely expensive to repair if gears are needed. Parts for both are quickly becoming extinct, now with many parts NLA. Also, consider that Lotus used a similar transmission in their 1985 and later Lotus Excel. Why? They wanted a good transmission.

Here's the scoop- the transmission needed for this project, which you will be sourcing as it's not included in the kit price, is a 530mm shifter position (20.86") they should be fairly common at salvage yards. If you find another one cheap with a different shifter location it's possible to get the correct remote shifter parts on an exchange basis for about $150.00 from New Zealand, but I recommend you save time & money and look for the 530mm shifter to start with.

You may be tempted to get the Big Supra transmission, capable of transmitting up to 400hp, but the W55 - W59 series (this is what I'd be looking for) is more than adequate for performance street use (capable to up to 300 hp I'm told) and is already a staggering leap forward in gear box technology compared to the old 4 or 5 speeds that came in the JH's. These things rock, as Toyota manufactured zillions of them, they're fairly bullet proof, parts are plentiful, and parts are realistically priced should you ever need repairs in the future.

The 5 Speed Kit includes these items:

Bell Housing - custom Jensen Healey cast aluminum, includes pilot bush sleeve, dowels
    Clutch plate (conversion 8 1/2")
    Pressure plate 8 1/2"
Speedo cable and right angle drive
    Thrust Bearing
    Crossmember
    Nose cone extension
  • You will need to modify the length of the drive shaft to fit (any local drive line shop can do this for you). You do need the shaft yoke from the Toyota shaft. This yoke on the end gets cut off and welded back onto the JH drive shaft and you're set. Kit is otherwise about everything you need less the Toyota 5 Speed Gearbox and shaft yoke, which you supply. This kit also uses the original JH clutch cable - a big advantage as it doesn't junk up your engine compartment with additional hydraulic lines and reserviours.

PLEASE READ: These are top quality parts being used, but because I cannot install it for you or see that's it's in fact done properly, it's impossible for us to offer any warranty on these. Likewise, if you over-rev your engine and pound your equipment into oblivion, well, I'd be very sad to hear it but unfortunately no warranty or guarantee is provided, offered or otherwise implied. Inspect your kit on arrival, if anything is amiss we'll need to make a claim with the shipping company immediately for damages. Any claims for damaged shipping needs to be made within 5 days. Everything is well packaged so I would be quite surprised if this ever happened.
