I've seen a lot of JH's with black paint in the scoops under the headlights.  Was that a factory option, or the paint scheme at one time?  Or do people just like it, so it shows up again and again in custom paint jobs?  I think it's pretty cool, so I might do it to my JH when I eventually get her painted.

Thanks,

Edward

IIRC it was factory standard on later models. What VIN was the starting point thought, I don't know.

Ed, the black paint appeared with 74 model year cars, I'm not at all certain of the build month or serial number for the change. The problem is that there is a strong reflection from the headlights almost straight up from the headlight 'scoops' as you called them. The black paint is only partly effective. It might be that the factory originally used a flat balck or low gloss paint.

My JH (16371, door date 03 May 1974) has the black paint on the headlight cowls and I believe it to be original.  The paint is noticeably less glossy than the semi-gloss stuff found on the chassis bits, but is definitely not a flat black.
