While browsing the Routine Maintenance section in the workshop manual I came across a note in RM 28. It said the transmission is filled for life and other than occasionally checking and topping up never needs to be changed. Am I the only one who finds this a bit strange?

uh-oh! you've committed the "cardinal" sin;---you read the instructions--shame.
Maybe they realized the car wouldn't go over 50k, so that was considered "for life" back then!
For the 4spd. tm. we add 4 oz. MoS2, available from Dow Corning as "M GEAR GUARD"9costs a little over $1/oz, but well worth it)
For 5spd. tm., don't add anything as it's not needed and will make the tm. "too slippery" for fast shifting.

Car manufacturers still write in manuals that transmission oil ( Manuel and automatic),and differential oil is filled for life.
So replace that oil on a regular basis will gif you a longer life and less replacement of those units at the dealer, for al lot of money.

So it’s always good to replace gear oil, surtenly when it’s 40 years old.
