The lower voltage via the ballast is supposed to benefit contact breaker point life. If you are using Petronix or equivalent setup you do not need to worry about the ballast as long as you have a coil that can handle continuous 12v.

Right... I do still have the stock points. My question was specific to the Lucas Sport Coil from the club store. Does it require a ballast resistor, or is it a straight 12v coil? That was I could just eliminate the whole ballast resistor and extra connection to the solenoid.

I am not familiar with the Lucas Sport coil but you can check it with an ohm meter to see if it has internal resistance of 3 ohms or more. My recollection is a straight coil will give about 1.5 ohms resistance.

Lucas Sport Coil DB105 has internal resistance of 3 ohms so it does NOT require ballast resistor.
