How many volts should be coming down the resistor wire from the tach to the coil? I've got about 2.5, that seems like way too little. If it is, why would that be?

I just kind of asked the same question in a different thread and haven't gotten a response yet. I was asking what the actual resistance of the wire (or ballast resistor, which is what I have) should be.

I just pulled off the resistor wire off the + side of the coil and got 11.60v

Opening the circuit like that will always get you the battery voltage, no matter the value of the resistor.

My suggestion would be to get rid of the resistor (wire), install a 12V coil - like a Lucas Sport Coil or a blue Bosch coil - and a Pertronix Ignitor-II. You will not regret it, and the tach will still work. No points to set ever again, and easier starting.

Could be:
1. You have a flaky connection somewhere adding resistance to the circuit.
2. The coil is a low-resistance type
3. the coil has an internal short
