My wipers failed during an foggy run to the Monterey Historics last August. Since the steering wheel is off to repair the plastic collar on the switch unit I figured it was a good time to assume the Lotus position and get this resolved.

The interesting thing is that the wipers failed slowly, reduced to 1/2 of the normal sweep and then 1/4. Finally they only attempt to move and then return to bottom. A stripping ZiiiP! is heard during each revolution during the time the wipers are not moving.

If the gear was stripped, wouldn't it just stop moving? I'm not clear on how the wiper rack is driven but this sounds like the likely failure.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I'd unscrew the cable from the wiper motor and see if the end is rounded off. Easier to get to that than it is the wheel boxes.

Thanks Mitch! I didn't need to unscrew the nut holding the cable because it was already loose. I tightened it up and problem solved!

Another 5 minure repair that I waited 6 months to get to.

Great write-up Jody. Thankfully I didn't have to go that far!
