Am getting a booming noise in the ole Mk1...

The noise from the exhaust, gearbox and carbs makes it a bit hard to pin down, but as it seems to increase in tempo with speed, a wheel bearing perhaps?

Or the engine damper?

well now that you have pinned it down to the location of the car :> I would suggest start looking underneath for a nice clean shiny area that maybe were some thing is hitting. I can't imagine a engine dampner even if it has failed making a noise, unless the firewall is torn and your engine mount is shot then the engine could torque over and hit.

Could be the U-Joints. I had a similar issue.
