Frustration prevails, It came off why won't it go back on.
 The steering shaft seems to not compact enough to fit. Is there a sequence that works?  I have been putting the upper knuckle on and then the lower knuckle, but it just doesn't want to cooperate. Any and all ideas will be appreciated.

I've found it easier to loosen the 2 bolts on the steering rack which then gives you enough free play to line up the shaft and slip it on.

Worked like a charm.  Only took a little while to get it done that way. Fiddled around alot longer to begin with.

Does anyone have tips on how to access the bolts on the steering rack?  I'm not convinced that mine are OEM, but getting to the nuts should be the same.  Thanks.

Waiting for the same answer... getting ready to order my new 4 into 1 exhaust header and I know removing the steering shaft is going to be part of the equation.

The two bolts that hold the steering rack pass thru the front cross member from front to back. The nuts (9/16" IIR) can be accessed from under the car (easiest with car on a lift) on the rear side of the front cross member. I use a socket with a long extension. The bolt heads are circular with a flat side that is supposed to keep the bolt from spinning.
When changing the steering shaft I just loosen the nuts to give enough freeplay of the rack to slip the shaft over the spline.
