 It does seem odd that the airflow is blocked by the piston. IIRC there are several spring ratings and the Jags used a lighter spring. If the piston pops open it takes a moment for the fuel to get there and you probably would get pinging instead of power.

I suggest you contact Joe Curto who can provide you advice on performance tuning. Then let us know!
