That is really strange. A cerified bank Check is about as safe as it can be. This guy must have been dropped alot as a baby by his parents as it seems he has trouble with basic trust.
The only thing I can think of is Western Union. ( let him pay the transfer fee). They can operate off a phone call once you inspect the car to make sure the "mafia" didn't leave anything in it before you drive home :)))
