I have been able to get a reasonable match by taking a sample (eg the headlight surround) to a paint shop and ask them to use their laser scanner to make up a few spray cans. It's never quite perfect but close.
The best result I have had was from a local hardware store who just mixed me up a tin of paint for metal surfaces; I use it to touch up small areas or spots where the finish isn't super important, like the engine bay. Saves a lot of masking off too.
