The 912 uses the same 'block' as the 907, but the lower Main Bearing Panel (MBP) is wider in order to increase the overall stiffness of the block assembly. That extra width means the front-right corner of the block-assembly interferes with the chassis crossmember. In order to fit the engine in the car, it's necessary to notch-weld the chassis to create the required clearance.
