A trick that I learned from reading one of the later Lotus Esprit manuals as posted by Tim/Esprit2 was to use bar magnets (available at any hardware store), one across each pair of tappets/followers, which will ensure that they do not fall out when the cam tower is wiggled out, and the shims will stay stuck to the undersides.
