 It's not unusual for installing an electronic ignition system to cause a tach to stop functioning correctly. The needle may still move, but the indicated RPM may be way off.

Pertronix sells a Tach Adapter Module. I've not used one, and can't say if it will work with a Smiths, Jaeger or JH tach.
