 the tabs hold a piece of 1/4 inch padded backing and the carpet. The carpet was glued to the backing and snug fit into place. I put a stick-on foil mat down on the tunnel first and then glued my carpet to the original backing and slipped it back in. The top edge is concealed by the centre console. I did not use the original padded backing elsewhere as it is a water trap and causes rust. hence the rotten floor in most original JH.
